Motorcycle Insurance in Connecticut: Coverage That Actually Protects You

Connecticut law requires liability insurance on every registered motorcycle — but state minimums often aren't enough to cover a serious accident. At Insure Connecticut LLC, we're an independent agency, which means we shop your policy across multiple carriers instead of selling you just one company's product, so you get coverage built around your bike, your riding history, and your budget.

Why Motorcycle Insurance Matters in Connecticut

Motorcycle accidents tend to be more expensive per claim than car accidents, because riders have far less protection than someone inside a vehicle. If you cause an accident, your liability coverage only pays up to your policy limits — after that, you're personally on the hook for:

  • Medical expenses for the other party

  • Motorcycle repair or replacement costs

  • Legal defense if you're sued

  • Lost wages and long-term care costs in a serious injury claim

Because Connecticut's minimum limits are relatively low, many riders carry higher limits than the law requires — not for compliance, but for real financial protection.

Connecticut's Legal Requirements for Motorcycle Insurance (2026)

To legally register and ride a motorcycle in Connecticut, your policy must meet these minimums:

Coverage
Minimum Required
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM)
$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident
Property Damage Liability
$25,000 per accident
Bodily Injury Liability
$25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident

This is often summarized as "25/50/25" coverage, but note that Connecticut requires both liability and UM/UIM protection at those limits — UM/UIM is not optional. It protects you if you're hit by a driver who has no insurance or not enough of it, which matters in Connecticut given how disproportionately motorcyclists are affected by crash severity. You can confirm current minimums directly through the Connecticut Insurance Department, and proof of insurance is required before the DMV will register your motorcycle.

Helmet law update: As of October 1, 2025, Connecticut raised the mandatory helmet age from 18 to 21 for both operators and passengers, along with anyone riding on a motorcycle learner's permit regardless of age. Riders 21 and older with a full endorsement are not legally required to wear a helmet, though it's strongly recommended. Failing to comply with the helmet law doesn't automatically void an insurance claim, but it can affect how fault is assessed after an accident.

This is general information, not legal advice. Insurance laws can change — confirm current requirements with a licensed agent or the Connecticut DMV before you ride.

What Affects Your Motorcycle Insurance Cost in Connecticut

There's no single "average" motorcycle insurance rate — carriers weigh several factors differently, which is exactly why comparing quotes matters. The main factors are:

  • Type and value of your motorcycle — sport bikes and high-performance models typically cost more to insure than cruisers or touring bikes

  • Engine size and modifications — custom exhausts, paint, or aftermarket parts can raise replacement cost

  • Riding history — accidents, violations, and years of licensed riding experience

  • Coverage limits and deductibles — higher limits and lower deductibles raise premiums, but reduce your out-of-pocket exposure

  • Where you garage the bike — your town's claims history and theft rates play a role

  • Annual mileage — year-round riders vs. seasonal or weekend riders

Because every carrier prices these factors differently, the same rider can get meaningfully different quotes from company to company — which is the core reason to work with a broker who shops multiple carriers rather than a single-company agent.

Coverage Options Beyond the State Minimum

State-minimum liability only pays for damage you cause to others. It does nothing for your own bike or injuries. Depending on your bike and how you ride, consider:

  • Collision coverage — pays for damage to your motorcycle after a crash, regardless of fault

  • Comprehensive coverage — covers theft, vandalism, fire, and weather-related damage

  • Higher UM/UIM limits — extra protection above the state's $25,000/$50,000 minimum

  • Medical payments (MedPay) — covers your own medical bills after a crash, regardless of fault

  • Custom parts & equipment coverage — important if you've added aftermarket exhausts, paint, chrome, or accessories, which is especially common on Harley-Davidson and custom-built bikes and typically isn't covered by a standard policy

  • Roadside assistance/towing — covers breakdowns, not just accidents

  • Agreed value coverage — for classic, vintage, or heavily customized motorcycles, this locks in a set payout instead of relying on depreciated actual cash value (see our classic car insurance page if you also own a collector vehicle)

Ways to Save on Motorcycle Insurance in Connecticut

You may qualify for discounts such as:

  • Motorcycle safety course completion — Connecticut law (Conn. Gen. Stat. § 38a-685) requires insurers to offer a discount, generally around 10% off liability coverage, for riders who complete an approved rider education course; course information is available through CONREP at 1-800-872-RIDE

  • Multi-policy (bundling) discount — combining your motorcycle with auto, homeowners, or umbrella coverage

  • Paid-in-full discount — paying your annual premium up front instead of monthly

  • Low annual mileage — seasonal or weekend riders often qualify for reduced rates

  • Clean riding record — no accidents or violations over a set period

If you already carry a policy with us, ask about bundling with your car insurance or umbrella insurance to maximize savings.
